Types of Work Visas in Finland

Before working in Finland, citizens from countries outside the European Union (EU), Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, and Liechtenstein will need to apply for a residence permit. The type of permit your employees will require is determined by the nature of their employment for your organisation. Most businesses will be interested in the following three types of Finnish work visas:

  • Business visa: An employee with a business visa can stay in Finland for up to 90 days. This visa, however, does not allow the employee to work directly. Attending conferences and seminars is possible with a business visa. For personnel who will not be remaining in Finland to work, this visa may be useful throughout the onboarding process.
  • Residence permit for self-employment: This permit may apply to some employees at your company, such as private entrepreneurs, partners, and cooperative members. Before this permission can be awarded, your company must be registered with the National Board of Patents and Registration's Trade Register.
  • Residence permit for an employed person: This is the most prevalent sort of visa, and most businesses will need to know about it if they want to develop their operations in Finland. Within this category, there are three types: continuous (A), temporary (B), and permanent (C) (P). Employees who are new to Finland should apply for a Temporary permission.

Requirements to Obtain Finland Work Visas

To obtain a working visa in Finland, each employee will need:

  • An employment contract
  • A valid passport and passport photo
  • A residence permit for an employed person application
  • Medical certificates

Application Process

When an individual is offered a position with a company in Finland, the procedure begins. To legally reside and work in Finland, you'll need an employment contract.

The employee will need to apply for a residence visa before travelling to Finland, which can be done online using the Enter Finland website. The employee must visit a Finnish diplomatic mission or embassy within three months of submitting the application and show original copies of the application appendices, including fingerprints and supporting documents. If an employee is unable to apply online, they can print the application form from the Finnish Immigration Service website and bring it, along with the appendices, to the nearest Finnish diplomatic mission.

The Employment and Economic Development Office will decide on the application's merits. After ensuring that the employee meets all requirements for a residence visa, the Finnish Immigration Service, or Migri, will make the final decision. Both the employee and the employer will get written notice of the decision.

The employee will obtain a residence permission card from the Finnish embassy once their application has been granted. The first permission is valid for one year and can be renewed at any Finnish police station.
